What Difference Does a Mat Make?

When I first framed this piece I used a single, dark gray, mat.

Then I decided it needed something more.

So I added a top mat. A bright white that matched the color of the paper (I left a small margin to showcase the artists signature and edition number).

This particular print is by Paco Pomet and served as the principle artwork for Phish's album Fuego, released in 2014.

After living with both versions on the shop wall I ended up right back where I started, with the single mat version. This particular mat has a slight distressed look which I like. BUT, I liked the version with the extra mat as well.

Art is subjective.

There is no right or wrong.

Which do you prefer?

Phish poster framing – Mexican edition

I wasn't able to make it to Phish's recent, three-night, run on the Mexican Coast but I was able to frame a couple of the official show posters (and watching people dancing in the surf on the webcasts was pretty cool).

The first one has three mats (top one is black suede) and a separate opening for the wristband while the second one has a similar mat scheme but a much more substantial frame (1.5" wide & 1.5" deep).

Detailed view–you can't really see the texture of the suede mat.

I always enjoy framing things that have to do with my favorite band. Here's a limited edition poster and ticket stub from their fall tour opener at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene that recently came into the shop.

For this project I used two layers of Crescent Select conservation matboard–with a second opening for the ticket stub–and 99% UV blocking conservation glass to protect the items. The dark brown frame–one of our value mouldings–is 1 1/4" wide and 1" deep, and has a slight wood grain pattern.

Limited edition screen print, Once A Lizard, by David Welker.

For this project I used two, solid-core, Ragmats from Crescent; a dark green for the bottom mat and a neutral tan for the top layer. These 100% cotton mats feature the same color throughout and are the top of the line as far as preservation goes.

The frame,  from Roma Moulding®,  is 1 inch wide with a scooped profile that draws your eye into the artwork. The natural stain mimics the trees in the print.

This piece was finished with Museum Glass® for the ultimate in protection and clarity.

Photographed with glazing in place, so there is some minor reflection.

This limited edition concert poster (hand signed/numbered) and tickets, from Phish's 2012, 3-night Labor Day run in Colorado, came in for framing last summer.

Double mat, conservation mounting & glass, in a deep, black metal frame.
